Just got an old fiddle marked DAVId HOPF on the back and on the inside. I know of lots of fiddles marked simply HOPF and most if not all are Hopf copies. This is the first, however that I have seem marked with both names. No other lables or markings appear. Is this just another copy?

All David Hopf (1) fiddles were branded in one of two ways...

David
Hopf (lower case, double-line)

or

Dafid Hopf (lower case, 'f' instead of 'v', single-line)

(note double and single line branding versions).

David Hopf (2) branded his instruments...

David Hopf (lower case, single-line)

or simply

David (lower case)

David August Hopf (1) branded HOPF (upper case) under the button, and had a written ticket inside, whilst David August (2) and David Christian Hopf seemed not to brand at all, but had written tickets inside. Since yours is branded on the inside, it disqualifies these three makers.

So basically, we have...

David Hopf (double line) is David (1)
Dafid Hopf (single line) is David (1)
David Hopf (single line) or David, is David (2)

If yours is on one line, lower case, it MAY be a David (2) or it may be a copy. If it is in upper case, it is definitely a copy, regardless of maker.

I hope this helps.

Regards,
Gordon
