Good evening, would you be so kind to help us with some basic informations on the origin of my friendīs violin and perhaps with its price evaluation?

Thereīs some text at the outside (back part of the fretboard-head):

"concert violin Straduar"

Inside, thereīs some label with a text too:

"Antonio Straduar
fecit Cremona
made in...."(illegible; Italy???)

The letters are hard to read, thatīs why we are not 100% sure of our transcription. Is it possible to say something as to the price of the violin (in an almost perfect state, just without one string?), please?

Thank you very much. Gabo

Hi Gabriel,

I belive your violin was made in Germany, probably around 1890-1910. They turn up rather frequently and were appearantly made in various grades, beeing indicated by the stamp on the back of the scroll:

Conservatory Violin - Straduari
Concert Violin - Straduari
Grand Concert Violin - Straduari
Solo Violin - Straduari

etc...

yours I guess would be a mid-priced model at the time. There are some rather favourable reports on the internet as to the sound of these violins. As such it could make a servicable instrument for someone. Unfortunately these factory-made violins isn't really worth any money today. Your best bet would possibly be to try to sell it locally, it might fetch a few hundred pounds, I'd say no more then Ģ500 though.

Hope this helps,
Alex
