I've been handed down a violin that has been in our family for at least 100 years.

Inside, there are initials which are handwritten in black ink saying what appears to be JAS, as well as the date written in pencil stating 1857. Another possible indentifying mark inside the violin is a diamond shape inset to the very centre of the back.

I've been searching, but failing to come up with any answers as to who made this, and wondered if anyone has any information that could help.

Apologies for the poor photo, its difficult seeing inside such a small gap!

This just looks like an owners name tag, written into the violin well after construction. Probably abbreviated version of James.

Thanks Graham. Not sure how it could have been done after construction though, there just doesnt seem to be enough space to get in there!
